Mike Womack’s piece “Metronome” is based on the mechanical television from the 1920’s and 30’s. A motor spins 500 small mirrors to create a greyscale of “pixels” by reflecting light from a single LED with different angles. The image comes together to form the footage of the Hindenburg disaster of 1937. In the Brooklyn Rail’s review of Womack, Shane McAdams says, “Womack finds the same thing in these crude machines that a figure painter might find in a Giotto or a Cimabue; there’s something terribly beautiful about almost getting it right… where the quixotic and the dreamy blend with an inventive use of materials to create something altogether unique.”
